College students today are eager to work and try what it’s like to earn their own money, rather than rely on their parents.
Aside from generating income, students can also develop a sense of responsibility and experience what work in the real world is like however, it’s not easy finding ideal jobs that will accept a college student’s qualifications and match his/her busy class schedule.
Here are suggestions of part-time careers ideal for college students, and help them prepare for their future professional careers.
BARISTAS AT COFFEESHOPS
Coffee shops are now popular hangouts in most metropolitan areas, there’s a demand for attendants or baristas to serve customers. This is a great opportunity for college students who want to start a career in the food and beverage industry or make their own similar business.
In well-known coffee shop outlets in the Philippines, it's vital for baristas to have good verbal and written skills. They should have a good understanding of the products that they offer in order to sell these better to their customers.
Coffee shops offer competitive wages that are at par with those of a typical corporate employee.
The monthly pay can range between PhP10, 000 and PhP15, 000.
Coffee shops hire college students who are at least 18-years old, and who are fluent in English.
BPO/CALL CENTERS
The business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the Philippines offers job opportunities, not only for college graduates, but also for college undergrads, and welcomes people from different educational backgrounds.
Working in BPO companies, particularly in contact centers, gives a great advantage to experience the real corporate environment.
First, the work schedule might likely be on night shift, which can allow a college student to work after their classes schedule.
Because it’s a corporate job, students will experience working with a team of corporate professionals, familiarize with the corporate work ethics and discipline.
There are some call centers who also offer a part-time schedule for those who are enrolled on a full-load course, and there are some companies hire on a contractual basis.
Most BPO companies offer competitive salary rates and give generous incentives and commissions to employees who have done well for a particular period.
Applicants must meet the most basic qualification, good communication skills in fluent English.
TUTOR
When a college student can fluently speak and write in English then he or she might work as an ESL (English as a second language) tutor.
Many foreign- and Filipino-run companies hire individuals who can effectively teach English to people coming from Korea and other Asian countries. Tutorials are either done face-to-face or on video chat through the Internet.
For in-person tutorials, students attend a class, which normally lasts for one hour or two, depending on their preferred schedule. Some students can choose to have the classes conducted in their own houses so the tutor would have to attend at the student’s residence.
This kind of work is similar to the usual teaching job where a teacher would have to prepare teaching materials and lesson plans for the lectures.
Meanwhile, online tutorials are in-demand especially that most of the students are based in their home countries. These students find this more convenient and cost-effective and pay English tutorial services on a session package bases.
ESL service companies operate out of offices where the online or phone teaching sessions are conducted, while some may allow the teachers to conduct the lessons within the comforts of their own homes.
Usually, the teacher is encouraged to engage the student in a conversation to help him improve his English and help him build his confidence when speaking the language.
The salary here is also fairly competitive, between P10, 000 and P25, 000 monthly on depending the hours of work. Some companies also give out incentives and bonuses to top performing teachers.
