The Job Search: Roel's Story.

Roel woke to the soft smell of hot oil frying sweet pork. Daylight was warm through his bedroom window. The young man sat up in bed, his eyes blank from a deep sleep that felt like decades.

Roel stared out until a thought registers in his head that today is the first day of his life as a graduate.

No more heading over to the campus. No more classes, textbooks, exams and projects. It's all behind him now, ahead lies his future of what he would make of it.

Roel placed his two feet on the floor and rose from bed. I must find a job, Roel thought.

Are you a fresh graduate or someone considering a change in companies or careers? If you are, then the following tips could help you find or research a job to apply for. Here are ways you can find the job that's right for you.

His face still damp, Roel walks out of the bathroom and heads over to the kitchen where Roel's mom is already setting breakfast before Roel's father and older brother John.

"Good morning", Roel said to everyone and sat down to enjoy a plate of garlic rice, egg and sweet pork strips. Mom poured Roel a glass of juice and smiled, "So what do you have planned today, son?"

"I got a game later with Brother Sam. We're teaching the boys some basketball plays," Roel answered his mother. "Then later I figure I stay home and prepare my applications and resumes on the computer."

Eyes on the newspaper he's reading, Roel's dad listened then nodded his approval.

Roel turned to John, "Kuya, does your company have any job openings for IT?"

John shrugged, "I don't know but I can ask." He chewed on some pork and rice then, "But don't expect any special favors."

"I won't. If ever there is, I'll apply using Mom's maiden name", Roel joked.

Dad folded his paper and cleared his plate into the kitchen sink. "I'll check too. Who knows?"

"Thanks Dad."

You can ask family, relatives for information. This is not nepotism. You are just asking if there are opportunities where they work.

"Keep your elbow tight to your side as you shoot," Roel instructed the boy as he makes the shot. The ball goes into the ring with a swoosh. Roel and the boy grinned at each other. "See that? You have more direction, more aim."

Roel joined Brother Sam at the sidelines watching the boys practice their shooting and collecting the loose balls and repeat the practice. Roel and Brother Sam have been running this basketball camp for young boys for quite some time and their team is among the top rankers in the barangay little league.

"You miss school?" asked Brother Sam.

Roel thought about his answer. "I guess it hasn't really hit me yet, the changes…"

"You looking for work? I could use help in setting up the parish's computer and website. It's only temporary but it's a start."

"Sounds good. Alright I'll consider it, thanks." Roel said.

Ask from friends. Someone in your social circle, church or other organization you are a member of may have leads to offer you. They can also offer you a job, through temporary and low-paying, can still be included as work experience.

Fresh from the shower, Roel came into his bedroom and switched his PC on. As the machine lit and warmed up, Roel changed into a shirt and shorts.

An hour later, he's been browsing on the Internet for career opportunities.

Try networking. Career networking websites such as BPO JOBS PH can go a long way toward helping you find a job.

Use a job search engine or portal. Job search engines can narrow down your search.  Many  let you register as a member where you can post your profile with your photo and resume for potential employers to view online conveniently.

There's a knock on the door. It's Roel's mom with the day's laundry, already clean and pressed. She places the bundle on the bed for Roel to place later in his closet. She moves to her son, looking over his shoulder into the computer screen.

"Any good prospects?" she asked.

"Some," Roel said. "My classmate Jenny invited me to this career fair at SM this weekend. I think I might want to check it out, for practice. There'll be interviews and free snacks, Jenny says."

You should consider attending career fairs. Career fairs are sometimes ideal for getting hired. Often this is good practice in preparing for one-on-one interviews so it's advisable to dress as if you would be going to one.

Best case scenario, you might find yourself already getting employed by the companies hosting the career fair. Best go there prepared with copies of your resume, and a general cover letter.

"And oh Mom, this weekend please make sure to get me the Sunday's copy for the ads," Roel said.

And don't forget to check newspapers. Some jobs just might not be advertised online.

Mom nodded. Then she left Roel alone to work on his resumes and application. The young man brooded over his collection of photos of himself, trying to select the ideal one that represents him attractively as a professional.

Roel smiled to himself, he always looked forward to new challenges.
