Build Yourself up as a Great Employee
As you start work, there are a few necessary abilities that you need to practice daily to be a valuable employee who performs well in the workplace, earn your fellow workers' respect, and achieve recognition and appreciation from your supervisors and employers in any industry, including BPO Philippines.
These necessary abilities are good communication, good computer skills and good people skills.
Good communication. Bad communication can lead to mistakes and failures. Workers who can communicate information and requests directly and correctly are valued, especially when they deliver well-organized reports with no spelling or grammar mistakes. It's also an important thing to be direct and clear even in speaking.
How to develop this: Constant writing and reading help develop the mind on how to organize one's thoughts better. Read newspaper reports frequently as these directly and correctly deliver news and information in a direct, short manner.
Good computer skills. Today, most employers require workers with technical skills, especially with using a computer to create reports and communication. Computers can not only create documents, but also calculate costing and finances, present ideas and proposals, generate images, graphics and videos for promotion and marketing. Computers are essential tools to work effectively and efficiently.
How to develop this: Start an interest with computers and computer software and share this interest by befriending your co-workers in the IT department. Browse through the Internet and do some casual research. Some software can be downloaded for trials and their manuals are actually free to read.
You can also invest some seminars and workshops offered by computer schools for the evenings and weekends. These are reasonably affordable and you get a certificate for the training. Having new computer skills gives you more value as a worker.
Good people skills. Employers want workers who can contribute to the progress and success of a team's project. Getting along well with co-workers, willing to help to get a project done rather than saying, "It's not my job", and working together to meet objectives and deadlines are what it means to be a team player.
One key aspect of having good people skills is being flexible, being able to adapt to changes in the work environment, handling different personalities in co-workers and bosses, as well as dealing with sudden emergencies with a cool head, coming up with resolutions instead of making the problem worse.
How to develop this: Take the initiative towards self-improvement. One can acquire these skills through experience, trial and error but one can also gain knowledge earlier by reading on books on self-improvement, personal efficiency, time and stress management, and personality-development.
One can also achieve and practice good people skills by keeping oneself mentally and physically healthy. This involves having a proper diet and exercise, avoiding unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking, being a good judge of character and make sure you surround yourself with good, decent-minded people, filling your mind with positive information and thoughts that help you motivate to do good work, and be a good person.
It is important you develop these abilities early on and continually develop these throughout your professional career in industries like BPO Philippines as well as your personal life.
According to the Greek philosopher Aristotle, we are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit.
