Stress is inevitable in any job but when it's consistent and strained, it can hold back one's performance, lead to bad temper or behavior that can ruin reputation.
If ever there's an opportunity or promotion, one can get passed over because one doesn't know how to manage stress. A rise up the corporate ladder can mean bigger pay and bigger perks, but it includes bigger responsibilities, bigger stress.
It is then better to be mindful, completely aware of what the source of stress at work is, and how it can be resolved.
Once the activities, duties and people that cause you stress are recognized, stress can be managed.
Here are tips to manage work stress:
Breathe. When people are stressed, they breathe less. The body requires oxygen to function, less amounts can lead to poor physical and mental performance.
Take a few minutes daily to breathe deeply. It can calm your body; lessen stress-tension levels leaving you more composed in handling problems, people or crisis.
Prioritize your Health. Take care of your body.
- Sleep properly; each person's body is unique. Some people may need more rest to deal with stress than others.
- Get a good diet. Stress is physiological; it can immediately increased by excess sugar or alcohol. Avoid too much sweets and hard liquor.
- Exercise regularly. Move yourself daily through walks and jogs. Stretching exercises at regular periods in the office and at home can help too.
Set short and long-term goals on improving job performance. Don't worry about the future, take care of the present and the future will take care of itself.
Celebrate Change. People depend a lot on routine but routine can lead to mental and physical stagnation that also increases stress.
Do activities to break off what appears or feels like a cycle of stress. Travel, meet up with old friends, make new friends, and pick up a new hobby.
Be different, do something new and you'll feel different, you'll feel new.
