For us who are gainfully employed, we should only count ourselves as fortunate to have a job in BPO Philippines, working day in and night out in order to make a living.
But sometimes working a job can feel like a misfortune, especially if you're asked to work too many hours, do not receive any adequate compensation or feeling of appreciation.
Maybe you feel stuck at your job, stagnating because you're not "growing", developing yourself as a professional, not given any new training or new challenges where you feel you can prove yourself, for maybe a promotion.
The worst feeling at working a job you're starting to dislike is when you feel you didn't sign up for this job in the first place.
Maybe you had a job you love but because of a sudden vacancy or need, you had to transfer to this other job and because you're good at whatever you do, they let you have the job, without asking if you want it for the long term.
Worse yet, the job you accepted don't look anything like the job you're actually doing.
What should you do when your job doesn't make you happy, and the feeling is now affecting your performance and your attitude with your colleagues in the workplace?
Don't Quit Yet
Your first thought maybe to begin a secret job search before hitting "Quit".
It is suggested that you resist the urge to make such decision.
First, better analyze what's making you feel bad about your job. Write up a list you can refer to, noting down what has changed and hasn't, between your expectations and your actual realities that you face day-to-day at your company.
Discuss with Management
These days, talent attrition, or employees resigning and moving out of the company, is a major issue. Your manager likely doesn't want to be under-staffed at any time. Or go through the inconvenience of hiring new people, training them to the job's requirements and office culture, basically starting from scratch all over again.
Reach out for help and discuss things first with your manager. You can be honest, transparent as that's the only way to have an effective dialogue. Before you begin discussing, you should also have an idea how can the manager help make things easier or better for you at your job.
If your supervisor is unable or unwilling to help you, you should seek help/counsel from human resources.
There's HR for Help
If you communicate valid reasons that cause your job dissatisfaction to your manager and to HR, there's a way to make things work for everyone's mutual benefit.
Are long hours conflicting with your need for rest or family time? Perhaps, management can work out a flexible time or work schedule for you.
If you need more training, find out how you can get that.
Do you feel like you're mentally inactive at your job? Ask for some additional, more compelling responsibilities.
Or maybe get you transferred to another department where your skills and experience is a good fit and you can work for the company in another job or capacity.
Moving On
If despite everyone's best efforts, resigning from your job may be the right thing for you to do.
Find a new job first to avoid a resume gap. Also, as you prepare to leave, treat your employer with respect and professional courtesy and offer to help in finding and training your replacement.
This way, you don't burn any bridges with the company, just in case-- you might choose to work there again in the future.
And learn from the experience. Only you can decide and work to make things better for yourself. There are only opportunities to succeed in any industry, including BPO Philippines, to make these opportunities bear fruit, it's up to you.
